  5. The Google Content Network. A Rough Guide.

If you ever set-up or looked at a Google Pay Per Click (PPC) campaign then you will no doubt have come across the “Google Content Network”. So what is it, should you use it and how do you get the best from it?

The Google Content Network is a network of websites where Google places advertisements for you. The theory being that Google knows what you are promoting and also knows what each site on its content network attracts in terms of visitors.

At launch the Google AdWords Content Network gave limited control to you in terms on how and where your ads were shown. As such it became a little tainted and paid for search professionals steered clear!

However, as time has passed Google has made some major improvements to the Content Network, and it really is a potential gold mine for paid for search now. You can opt-in and out of specific sites. You can select the demographic of surfer you are targeting and so on.

Google themselves claim that the Content Network has a reach in excess of 80% of all internet users. Can you afford to ignore it?

So, how do you use the content network, how do you give yourself the best chance of a cracking ROI? Here’s our Rough Guide to getting the most out of the Google Content Network!

    1. See it differently to your normal paid for search.

Think about the consumer. In a search situation, they are actively searching for the ‘keyword(s)’ you are targeting. So your ad text relates to that keyword, if structured correctly your ad text will feature the keyword, once if not more times. So the consumer searches for “Best Loan Rates” your ad text says “The Best Loan Rates with an instant decision”. Simple!

With the Content Network, it’s different. The consumer is browsing a site. They are not actively looking for information on the Best Loan Rates. So if your search ad text is the same on the content network then it will be wallpaper and won’t stand a chance of being clicked!

    2. Always run your content ads in a separate campaign.

Google offers you the chance to run your Ad Groups in the Search and Content Networks, which is why most people do. Don’t! Set-up separate campaigns for the Content Network, with different ad treatments!

    3. You are interrupting, not delivering!

Remember where the consumer is with the Content Network. They are browsing a site. You have to get their attention, hold it, communicate with them and get them to click. Imagine a shopping centre and a typical shopper, wandering around during their lunch break. They are killing time. They are receptive to messaging, but the messaging has to be powerful and impactful.

So it’s not “The Best Loan Rates with an instant decision” in this instance. It’s “Get the car you always wanted for less than you thought” or “A holiday in the sun for less than £10 a week”.

    4. Analyse and act!

Once you are off and running with the Google Content Network you can look at performance stats, which will show you how each site on the network is performing for you. Analyse regularly and remove sites that are not working for you. Ideally, if you have your analytics set-up correctly, you will be tracing Goal Conversions and will be able to see not only which sites on the network are pulling traffic for you but those that are delivering conversion. Act on it!

  6. Interesting Article on Mobile Advertising from New York Times

Every year around this time, a few brave forecasters declare that advertising on mobile devices is poised to become the next big thing in marketing. And every year, the results disappoint.

But this year, with technology powerhouses like Apple and Google introducing whole new mobile devices and buying up ad firms specializing in the small screen, the forecasts may finally be right.
